Eyeing Effie

So I have a pretty good "eye."  I can often eyeball stuff and just make it work sewing-wise.  Maybe because I've always been a visual person and my parents were both artists.  Maybe because I'm so math impared I've developed the skill to compensate.  Who knows.  But things like drafting a simple sleeve for myself that fits the first time with no calculations and no pattern, straight lines, adding even seam allowances around curved pattern pieces, drawing a circle freehand, I'm pretty good at all of those.

This is good because I am terrible with math, but it's bad because every once and a while I majorly f*&^ up.

But with Effie I gotta say, the eyes have it.  I was ON the other day, eyeballing all kinds of stuff and getting it right and DONE.  I love when that happens.  Anyway, that's a large part of why I got so much done.  I threw my wig, jacket and accessories on for a quick dopey pic. Can you say PURPLE?

Lost Hope Fairy Gown

A few of us who are fans of the book/series Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell decided it would be fun to do fairies from the Gentleman with the Thistledown Hair's sinister manor - Lost Hope.  Mine is basically a regular changeable green/white silk regency gown with a sequined net open robe that I hand beaded with clear and iridescent beads and black freshwater pearls .  I wanted it to look sort of like fairy finery that had been drowned and tattered or left in the sea - a Lady in a Gown the Color of Shipwreck.

I still need to finish all my accessories but I'm pleased with how it turned out!

P.S.  You can catch a glimpse of the iridescent green pointy-toed flats I found on ebay to go with it.

Bits and Bobs

You may have noticed the Bits and Bobs have fallen by the wayside.  I'm afraid I just can't keep up my real world obligations and all the fun stuff I'd like to share!

However, many of the same things I might have shared with you in Bits and Bobs ARE making an appearance on the Costumer's Closet Facebook page, please follow me there for more fun costume tidbits!

Almost there!

One more bird done, this is the center back bird - and one bird to go!  Whew!  I think I might actually get it done for Costume College.  :P
