Costume College - What I Wore Saturday Gala: Cersei Blue Birds

Finally, more than a year after I started it, I finished my Cersei birds gown.  I had a LOT of photos taken of this gown, but I think I may have to have more done.  I hadn't been very happy with my Cersei hair at Wondercon, so I bought a new wig and while I liked it at first, after seeing the photos I actually like the old one better.  And I think I need more shots of the details of the embroidery on the gown.

This was a much more difficult dress to make than the mourning one.  Embroidery and fabric painting aside, the fabric was stiffer with less give and less drape and my shape has become more hour-glassy than it was when I made the first gown so the princess seams really gave me hell.  Nevertheless I got it done and by and large I am happy with it.

I felt like a princess, or at least an evil queen and that was my goal!

This is my favorite photo

A shot of the back of the gown
A close up of the left sleeve embroidery, yes, those are real feathers!

And my silly "I heart Jaime" and "Hear Me Roar" garters!

  1. All the effort really pays off! You and the dress look amazing and you seem to be a much nicer Cersei than the one in the books...

  5. This turned out amazing!!! I'm not even done with mine yet haha. Just had a question, is the dress a one piece or two pieces and if so what sort of pattern did you use? Also, what material is the belt made out of??

    1. Thank you! It's one piece with the seams piped. I used the sleeves from the Butterick pattern and modified the simplicity pattern to be a true wrap dress. I also made the side panels wider and the back skirts wider so the skirts would be fuller over all.

I cheated on the belt and bought it on Etsy! I'll look up the seller if you want, it's made of fun foam.

    2. Thank you! Yeah that would be great! Also, do you have a link to that pattern? I was originally going to make it a two piece (skirt and a tunic sorta style) to make it full? But I wasn't sure if that would work or if making it wider and a one piece would work out...

    3. Sorry it was Mccalls not butterick, McCalls M6940 and Simplicity Pattern 1487. Mostly the Simplicity one, the McCalls was just for the sleeves which aren't right in the Simplicity one.

I had to also cut two front panels to make it a true wrap and make them slightly wider.

Here's the link for the Etsy seller: https://www.etsy.com/transaction/190860348

    4. Thank you so much!!! One last question, did you create a linoleum stamp to make the patterns on the side? They're absolutely gorgeous!!!!
