Victorian Ballgown redux

I realized I hadn't posted about my new Victorian ballgown. It was an interesting project.  I had a ball coming up and wanted to make something that was a little shorter and easier to dance in but using fabric I already had.  I thought I could cut some time out by using an underskirt I'd made for a Victorian fancy dress costume as my base.  And I had a remnant of the same fabric...but not enough for trim or skirt draperies.  What to do?  Raid the stash for other remnants and make it work!

I had some green silk left from my Lost Hope Fairy as well as some changable silk taffeta left over from another project...but again, only a little bit.  So with clever piecing I managed to get a dress out of three different fabrics.  The really hilarious part?  The front of the drape isn't the same fabric as the back!

Can you tell?

Next up: I'll edit and post my pictures from the Ball.  :)

  1. I'm sorry; but, the two blues are really too different to blend well together. The Blue in the main dress has distinctive lavender tones to it. The other blue does not have that undertone at all. Seeing the two so close together really is disturbing to me. Perhaps it needs a pink overlay of some type.

  2. Sweet! Making danceable length dress is so smart. I thought I shortened my last dress, but it still makes dragging noises.

    1. Yes! It's really hard to dance in dresses that are too long!

    1. Thanks! :D I was pretty proud I managed to "make it work" with just a handful of scraps to spare.

  4. Amazing! I am always to chicken to make colors work. I end up making modern stuff instead of scraps like this. Am very impressed wit how you pulled it off.

    1. Thank you! It was close, I literally had a tiny handful of scraps when I was done.

  5. Oh my gosh, I love this dress so much. I adore the mix of blues, the whole dress reminds me of crystal clear ocean with the varied blues and greens and golds.
